Canon 85/1.2L II

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 USM L II is THE portrait lens in the Canon lens lineup and within this scope it offers excellent if not outstanding field capabilities. It has an extremely sharp center quality and a superb bokeh. Technically it has also some flaws like relatively soft borders/corners and high vignetting at large aperture settings. In high contrast situations you may also spot some LoCAs (bokeh color fringing). Lateral CAs as well as distortions are pretty much non-issues again.

The build quality is up to pro standards but we expected no less from a lens in this price class. Compared to its predecessor the AF speed has been doubled and while it may not be blazingly fast it's certainly good enough now. The "manual focus-by-wire" approach may not catch many fans but it's more a aspect to get used to rather than a real weakness.

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 USM L II showed a great performance in our previous APS-C test. Unsurprisingly it's not quite as good on a full format DSLR but if you're looking for a portrait lens this could be "the one".

50/1.2L

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 USM L left rather mixed feelings here at Photozone. It was able to convince in the APS-C scope but on a full format DSLR its weaknesses became much more obvious. The good news is that the center resolution is generally fine across the board so shallow depth-of-field lovers may not be disappointed. However, when looking at the whole image frame the results are generally less than thrilling. The border resolution as well as the vignetting is rather poor from f/1.2 till f/2. The situation isn't all that bad at f/4 and beyond but if you're looking for superior -technical- quality levels this is simply not the place to be. The level of distortions and lateral CAs is also not overly impressive for a prime lens. It is tricky to judge the quality of the bokeh. The lens is surely capable of producing an exceptional "cream" at very large apertures - more so than most lenses thanks to f/1.2 of course - and the bokeh is also technically perfect near in center of the image field. However, in critical situations the border and corner bokeh can be very nervous. It's not a show-stopper but you've to know what you're doing here (keeping a pronounced focus spread between your main subjects and border structures). The build quality is fantastic and it's a joy to play with the lens out there but at the end of the day its the image quality that counts and there're some question marks where the global performance is in line to the rather hefty price tag.

The result of this review will probably cause some "friction" in the community. Canon L lenses are some sort of holy grail and criticizing such lenses is usually not overly well perceived. However, it is our primary task to evaluate the technical performance of a lens, less so the creative potential - that's up to you and your idea of your specific target applications. If you simply require that extra "cream" potential of the f/1.2 aperture @ 50mm there'll be no way around this lens no matter what.

35/1.4L

The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 USM L is certainly an impressive piece of engineering but it struggles a bit on full format DSLRs - at least technically. The center resolution is excellent straight from f/1.4 but the borders and extreme corners are soft here. That said it is certainly capable of delivering images with a very shallow depth-of-field and that's the primary point of this lens after all. The quality of the bokeh could be a bit better better towards the borders although we haven't really seen a really good performance from a moderate wide angle lens here so far anyway. The EF 35mm f/1.4 USM L has naturally some very shiny sides as well. At f/2.8 it produced a new record in terms of center resolution and at f/5.6 it's pretty much excellent across the image frame so it can be bitingly sharp for mainstream photography.

The build quality of the EF 35mm f/1.4 USM L is superb but we did only miss some sort of weather sealing like in the EF 24mm f/1.4 USM L II. The AF is very fast and near silent.

The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 USM L is not a flawless lens but it can give you great results in the field.

17-40L

It's not exactly easy to design a flawless full format lens and the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 USM L shows its part of the struggles here. The lens is not overly fast but it has a comparatively broad range for a lens in this class and it seems as if Canon has overstretched things a little with respect to the 17mm setting. The lens is able to deliver a very high resolution for most of the image field but the corner performance is poor thus spoiling the game here - this is like cappuccino without the cream for a ultra-wide lens where corner to corner sharpness is simply more critical than for a tele lens for instance. High vignetting and heavy distortions on top don't make things any better here. However, these rather critical comments apply to the 17mm setting only and from 20mm onwards it's actually a good to very good lens without any major weakness. The mechanical quality is on an exceptionally high level as is the AF performance. If you're aware of its limitations it's still a desirable lens especially considering its very fair pricing.

16-35L

The Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 USM L II may not be the greatest lens around in absolute terms but it delivers regarding its primary purpose - a very good performance at its ultra-wide to wide settings (16-26mm) from about f/4 onwards. This isn't all that simple as we've seen during the test of the EF 17-40mm f/4 USM L. On the downside the lens is rather mediocre at 35mm although still perfectly fine at medium apertures. A major weakness is the amount of vignetting at f/2.8 especially at 16mm but to be fair this is a general problem in this lens class when using a full format DSLR. The Canon lens suffers also from a typical degree of barrel distortions at 16mm whereas it's only a minor problem from 20-35mm. Lateral CAs are very well controlled throughout the range. The bokeh (the quality of the out-of-focus blur) could be better but, again, few ultra-wides are really good here anyway. Flare wasn't a big issue during our field tests. The build quality of the lens is exceptional and the AF speed and accuracy is on a very high level. All-in-all a good offer although it will not knock your socks off.

Verdict
It was about time. The old Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM L IS (mk I) was a good lens but hardly something to rave about especially when used at 200mm. Canon claims to have the leadership in the tele lens arena and they probably do but so far with the exception of this lens segment. Well, this was then and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM L IS II is now and it corrects this last remaining flaw in the Canon tele lens segment. It surpasses its predecessor easily and it did even manage to top (very slightly so) the EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS which is almost a legendary performer. The mk II is very sharp across the range including the critical 200mm f/2.8 setting. Lateral CAs are basically negligible and bokeh fringing is relatively well controlled. The vignetting is visible at f/2.8 albeit far from extreme within the full format scope and it's not at issue anymore at smaller apertures. The bokeh has a high quality for a zoom lens. The 70-200mm mk II produces some slight barrel distortions at 70mm and slight to moderate pincushion distortions towards the long end. This is about the only aspect where prime lenses tend to be visibly better but it's certainly no show-stopper when considering the typical applications for such a lens.

The build quality is outstanding and leaves nothing to be desired. The AF is both speedy and accurate. The IS ("image stabilizer") is capable of giving you a gain equivalent to about 4 f-stops - also in field conditions.

The Canon lens has only a single significant drawback - its pricing. The costs increased by ~25% compared to the 70-200mm f/2.8 USM L IS mk I. However, it's also quite obvious that the price can be justified relative to the performance level. Therefore ... highly recommended!

爱死小小白IS

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS is an amazing lens. It is truly outstanding when used on APS-C DSLRs and it suffers only from a minor quality deteriorations on full format DSLRs. The resolution figures are easily on prime levels throughout the whole range and even at max. aperture. Unlike most other full format lenses it manages to keep the vignetting on a moderate level. Lateral CAs and distortions are usually also nothing to worry about. The quality of the bokeh may not be as good as the very best fix-focal lenses but it's very good for a zoom lens. The build quality is excellent with the new sealing as a another highlight. On top of that the lens now features a image stabilizer with an efficiency equivalent to 4 f-stops (at cost of shutter speed if exploited to the max). The only drawback is the very high price tag although price/performance-wise this is still a very sound offer. Highly recommended!
