A photo of the Jeep exhibit captures a Wagoneer Laredo station wagon with roof rack. The scene is before the opening of the 1981 Chicago Auto Show, and located on the lower level of McCormick Place. An insiginia on the front fender advises that the Wagoneer had four-wheel drive.

The new Scrambler sits in the foreground of the AMC/Jeep exhibit area before the opening of the 73rd annual Chicago Auto Show, Feb. 21-March 1, 1981. A fabric roof covers the front occupants, as in any Jeep CJ, but the rear consists of an open cargo box with roll bars. Other Jeep models can be seen toward the rear, including a regular CJ at left and a red Cherokee Chief wagon at right.

Either a four- or six-cylinder engine might be installed in the Jeep Scrambler, a pickup-truck rendition of the familiar CJ series. Scramblers adopted wider front and rear tread width this year. "We wrote the book on four-wheel drive," say signs at the Jeep display space on the lower level of McCormick Place. Note the fabric "door" and top on this Jeep.

Built by AMC in Wisconsin using Renault drivetrains (from France), a new Encore sits on a raised rectangular platform at the main-floor exhibit space for AMC/Jeep/Renault products. This year, Encore hatchbacks joined the Alliance sedans that had debuted in 1983. AMC (American Motors) was Renault's partner in the U.S. market. Other Renault/AMC models may be seen toward the rear.

At left center of this scene from the 1985 Chicago Auto Show are AMC Jeeps. A Jeep Cherokee Chief station wagon has its tailgate raised, and protruding into the photo is the front end of a red Jeep CJ-7 Laredo. The Renault exhibit space is at right rear.

Traditional-minded four-wheel-drive sport-utility buyers often opted for the upright-profiled Jeep Cherokee, pictured at the Jeep/Eagle truck exhibit space on the lower level. This red example has Laredo trim (a $3492 option). A sign toward the rear promotes the Jeep Renegade, said to be arriving in fall 1990.

New for 1990, a Lumina APV minivan is the featured model in this scene at the lower-level space for Chevrolet trucks in the 1990 Chicago Auto Show. This was one of three new General Motors front-wheel drive minivans, each with plastic-like body panels. Glimpses of two additional models are visible, including a rear-drive Astro van on a raised platform toward the right.

Toyota's 4Runner sport-utility vehicle fills most of this shot at the space for 1990 Toyota trucks on the lower level of McCormick Place. The 4Runner was available in either a two-door or four-door body configuration, and powered by the buyer's choice of the four-cylinder or V-6 engine.

New for 1991 (introduced in spring 1990), an Explorer sport-utility vehicle sits on a raised platform at the exhibit space for Ford products, on the upper level. Available with either two or four doors, Explorer replaced the prior Bronco II. Ordinarily, trucks are displayed on the lower level of McCormick Place. Portions of two passenger cars can be seen in the left and right foreground, including a maroon Escort at far left. Subcompact Escorts had been redesigned, introduced as early '91 models.

A Golf 4-door hatchback dominates the left foreground of this scene at the main-floor exhibit space for Volkswagen automobiles. Four engines were available in hatchback Golf and notchback Jetta models, including a diesel four-cylinder and a dual-cam four (in the new Golf GTI 16V and the Jetta GLI 16V). Portions of several other Volkswagen models can be seen toward the rear, including a glimpse of a Cabriolet (convertible), based on the old Rabbit design. Several banners refer to "Fahrvergnugen," which was the VW theme at this time.

A red Land Cruiser sits on a raised round platform at the lower-level display for Toyota trucks. Another Land Cruiser can be seen at left. Introduced in March 1990 as a '91 model, this was the first redesign for the full-size Land Cruiser sport-utility in a decade. Permanent four-wheel-drive was standard, and the 4.0 liter inline six-cylinder engine produced 155 horsepower.

Visitors to the 1997 Chicago Auto Show were among the first in the U.S. to see Toyota’s “Crawler”-equipped 4Runner sport utility vehicle. The Crawler system featured four triangular tank-track units which replaced the conventional wheel/tire combination. Installation of the system required no major modifications to the vehicle, and involved removing the existing tires and wheels and simply bolting the Crawler unit in their place. Crawler-equipped vehicles can be driven at speeds up to 50 mph.

Avanti introduced its Studebaker sport utility prototype at the 2003 Chicago Auto Show. The vehicle ruffled the feathers of General Motors, which not only was selling the look-alike Hummer SUV at the time, but displaying it only a few feet from the Avanti display.

During the 2000 Chicago Auto Show, Mayor Richard M. Daley stated that nothing shaped 20th century America more than the automobile, and wondered what the automobile's role would be in the new 21st century. First Look for Charity raised more than $1 million for 12 Chicago area charitites, and a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban was the evening's grand prize. Hot topics were hybrids and fuel cells. Rendering on the show program cover is of the Pontiac Piranha concept vehicle. On the right, a near-vertical 25-foot high rock formation in the Jeep exhibit, included a 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sport scaling the monolith. The visual dramatization was created to demonstrated that the new Jeep had greater off-road capabilities than previous models.

The 2002 Jeep Liberty Renegade made its world debut at the Chicago Auto Show on February 6. Tom Marinelli, vice president- - Chrysler/Jeep Global Brands, gave the media at a press preview a run down on the Jeep that would replace the Cherokee. The Renegade used during the presentation, was painted in bright cactus green and sported an activity light bar, bolted-on appearing wheel flares, removable side steps and a two-tone front fascia. For serious off-roading explorations, the running boards could be removed. Standard engine consisted of a 210-hp 3.7-liter V-6. Available in either 2 or 4-wheel drive, the Liberty came fitted with 16-inch white-letter tires mounted on aluminum wheels. Interiors were upholstered in woven cloth and leather, accented by an aluminum-trimmed instrument panel.

Posed in an off-road diorama at the 2002 show, was the 2003 Subaru Forester compact sports-utility vehicle. This was the second-generation Forester SUV and was based on the Impreza subcompact platform. Fresh styling and more legroom distinguished the new Forester wagon from its predecessors. Forester was all-wheel drive and powered by a horizontally opposed 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. Projected on a large screen in the background were front and rear views of the Forester.

A specially equipped Land Rover Range Rover was on display during the 2004 show, promoting the Drive Around the World - Longitude Expedition, which began on November 1, 2003. Land Rover Certified Pre-Owned served as the exclusive vehicle sponsor for the nine month, 32,000-mile international expedition designed to increase awareness and raise funds for Parkinson's Disease and provide global educational opportunities for students everywhere.

The 2004 Jeep Police K-9 Liberty was designed and built from information provided by the Warren Michigan Police Department. Modifications included special decals, K-9 barrier, light bar, cargo tray and floor mats. Warren's K-9's have been used to assist many sheriff, state police and U.S. Custom officials.
Avanti introduced the 2005 Studebaker XUV (Xtreme Utility Vehicle), at the Chicago Auto Show. The XUV had a 6,000-lb. curb weight and a choice of either a 325-horsepower, 6.0 liter turbo-diesel V-8 or a 310 hp 6.8L V-10, which could be equipped with an optional supercharger, raising the engine rating to 425 horses. Offered with a five-speed transmission, the XUV measured 83 inches wide, 85.5 inches tall and 216 inches long, with a 137-inch wheelbase. Standard third row seating gave enough room for everyone, and plenty of cargo space for all of their things. The cabin was appointed in theater; included a CD player, cargo tie-downs, step bars, tow hooks and cab lights, which make this vehicle appropriate for work and play, soccer games and a night on the town.

Built off the new body-on-frame four-door Jeep Wrangler, the Trailhawk concept offered an-road open-air excitement. The side windows and diagonal quarter windows were fully retractable, while the gray-tinted twin longitudinal glass panels over the first- and second-row seats and the glass panel over the cargo compartment were removable, as was the swing-up rear window. With a 116-inch wheelbase, the Trailhawk’s dash-to-front-axle dimension was dramatically long, while the front and rear overhangs tight and abbreviated. The long hood is fronted by a signature seven-slot Jeep grille, and with the headlights cropped and peering out from beneath a diagonal brow gives a hawkish expression, hence the ‘Trailhawk’ name. Framing the 22-inch, five-spoke wheels were robust fender flares that were dramatically offset from the body. Inside the four-passenger cabin was a full-length central floor console, and individual premium leather seating in Bark Black and Firewood Orange.

People attending the Chicago show had the opportunity to take rides with professional drivers in DaimlerChrysler vehicles on simulated off-road trails and inclines situated on the show floor. Ironically, the very first Chicago Auto Show in 1901 featured a track where visitors could take rides to learn what the automobile was all about.

Since it went on sale in late March, 2006, the FJ Cruiser captured the imagination of the consumer, especially the styling that harkens back to the legendary Land Cruiser FJ 40's. Toyota commissioned ASC (American Specialty Cars) of Huntington Beach, California to produce the soft-top prototype. A TRD supercharged 4.7 liter I-Force V-8 was used and ASC installed a customized InfiniVu roof, which included a canvas top that could be opened toward the front or rear of the vehicle. The body was finished in Heritage Orange, trimmed in dark gray Teflon trim, and capped by a bright white top. Also new was the small cargo bed/tailgate assembly, a dropping rear window, wraparound rear-quarter glass, 33-inch Mickey Thompson tires and American Racing wheels.

Since 2005, DiamlerChrysler has set-up a half-mile indoor track on the show floor for vehicle demonstrations, like this Jeep hill climb from 2007. This is reminiscent of the 1901 show, when a wooden circular track inside the Coliseum provided spectators their first rides in horseless carriages.

For the entire 10-day run of the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, consumers had a chance to experience the on- and off-road capabilities of Jeep vehicles without leaving the show floor. 'Camp Jeep' was a 25,000 sq.ft. exhibit with sections to demonstrate ground clearance, traction, stablity, articulation and suspension. With company drivers at the wheel, riders took on creative obstacle courses was an 18-foot mobile mountain and a 12 x 15-foot section of terrain simulating fallen logs measuring 18 inches in diameter. Attendees also experienced the adrenaline rush of looking nearly straight up or straight down as they navigated a 45-degree wedge to demonstrate the vehicle's body articulation. Each ride lasted approximately five minutes.

A lovely spokeswoman posed with the 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited four door at the Chicago Auto Show. Though it carried the Wrangler name and basic styling, the four-door Unlimited versions featured several changes to differentiate it from the two-door models. It’s wheelbase was 116-inches, up from the two-door’s 95.6. Also rear-wheel drive came on the base Sport and mid-range Sahara models. Optional was the Command- Trac four- wheel drive. The Rubicon was very off-road capable and only came with Rock-Trac four wheel drive. Standard across the board was the 202-hp 3.8 liter V-6 and a six speed manual transmission, with a four-speed automatic optional. Changes for 2010 paralleled the two-door Wranglers with an easier to operate Sunrider soft top, fuel saver indicator standard, along with fog lights and tow hooks. Also standard were compass and outside temperature indicators. Two-tone keather seating were available for the Sahara and Rubicon. Wrangler Unlimited models featured full-framed or half doors, exposed hinges, fold-down windshield and innovative removable convertible tops. Three new colors for 2010 were Surf Blue, Natural Green and Dark Charcoal.

Based on the Dodge A-100 pick-up truck, the radical Deora customized truck was fabricated in metal by the Alexander Bros. of Detroit. The windshield would rise up like a tailgate on a wagon, permitting the lower front section short of the headlights to swing open. At the same time the entire steering gear swung to one side to allow the driver to enter or exit. Engine instruments were located on a panel to the left of the driver with the important tachometer and speedometer being housed on a center console. Though the slant six cylinder engine powered the Deora, Dodge said that a 318 V-8 could be fitted.

Terradyne, a 5-seat concept vehicle from GMC, took it’s name from “terra,” Latin for “of the earth,” and the Greek “dyne,” meaning “strength and power.” Terradyne was the first in a family of futuristic GMC concept trucks, with bold bodywork and many innovations aimed at the need of the recreational light trucker. The 6-foot cargo box was powered to extend to 8-feet when more cargo room was needed, and built into the cargo bed walls were storage boxes. Terradyne’s powerful Duramax 6.6-liter V-8 intercooled turbo-diesel was mated to an Allison 1000 Series 5-speed automatic transmission.

Weighting only 2600 pounds, the Ford EX 2-seat concept vehicle featured high- quality, detailed composite body sections on a Chrome-Moly steel frame that was resistant to corrosion and ready to take on any off-road adventure. To achieve a 50/50 weight distribution, the transfer case and aluminum radiator with dual fans were moved rearward, and an ecto-skeletal design allowed the components to be visible. In lieu of door handles, padded grip areas on the top and side frame eased access when climbing in and out of the cabin, plus the bronze tinted windshield could fold down and clip to the top of the hood. Other features included dual stainless steel side exiting exhausts, 5-spoke, 17-inch cast aluminum wheels, and a full size spare tire cradled behind the seating area. A 375 horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine was supercharged, produced 410-pound feet of torque to the 4-wheel drive system, and was mated to a 5-speed manual box.

Following up its rugged-looking Power Wagon and Power Box concept trucks, Dodge applied the bold retro-look styling to the smaller Dakota-sized pickup and came up with the M80 concept displayed at the 2002 Chicago Auto Show. Powering the M80 was a 3.7 liter Magnum V-6 engine mated to a five speed manual gearbox. Prominent PET-plastic exposed fenders and storage boxes gave an off-road flavor to the four-wheel drive truck and contrasted with the yellow painted body.

Chrysler Group displayed the Dodge Kahuna concept during the 2003 Chicago Auto Show to illustrate that a vehicle could be functional like a minivan, but cool enough to meet many needs without bowing to convention. Seating six-passengers, the Kahuna's exterior had short front and rear overhangs, and was finished in Point Break Blue, with composite bird's eye maple laminate accents along the side panels. A fully retractable water resistant see-through fabric roof was silver/gray, and the frameless windows dropped completely into the body. The prototype came equipped with a 2.4 liter turbocharged, 215 horsepower four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. Dodge Kahuna rolled on 22-inch wheels, with an outer dimension of 32-inches.

Land Rover featured its first ever concept show car during the 2004 Chicago Auto Show. Called Range Stormer, it is a high performance, sports tourer SUV concept, which showcases a future design direction for Land Rover. The supercharged V-8 Range Stormer is conceived to deliver the best possible on-and off-road composure and control by optimizing the entire vehicle set-up, including suspension, powertrain, throttle response and traction control.

Ford Motor Co. indicated that the Model U took up the heritage from the Model T and reinterpreted it for the 21st century. The Model U offered SUV driving excitement that would be affordable, and could grow with a customer's lifestyle and aspirations. Powered by the world's first supercharged hydrogen internal combustion engine, the 2.3-liter, 4-cylinder was also equipped with a hybrid electric transmission. Model U's unique 3-box profile exterior had a glossy appearance, with doors that were matte and grooved for style and structural integrity. A power hood opened from the windshield toward the front of the SUV. Overhead, a power-retractable canvas soft top opened rearward and the rear window folded into the deck lid, which then folded back and down into the floor.

Infiniti's luxurious Triant sports coupe concept vehicle featured a setback 2+2 cabin, electrically operated gullwing doors, sharply sloped windshield, broad shoulders, a hatchback, and oversize wheelwells stuffed with 19-inch chromed aluminum-alloy wheels and aggressive low-profile tires. Built on a modified GM midsize truck platform, the Hummer H3T features a 350 horsepower, turbocharged Vortec 3500 inline 5-cylinder engine backed by the heavy-duty Hydra-Matic electronically controlled four-speed transmission. Painted Petrol Blue Metallic and Satin Titanium, the exterior details include side-access doors, along with drop-down assist steps that double as weather-tight storage compartments. Riding on 34-inch-tall tires, the H3T has 11.5 inches of ground clearance. Underneath, a carbon fiber skid plate/belly pan is added for extra protection. Nike-designed Sphere seat fabric, military-inspired toggle switches, dash mounted altimeter, compass and inclinometer highlight the interior.

The FTX concept pickup truck provides a hint to the size and styling of Toyota's next big-truck platform. At nearly 19 feet in length, nearly seven feet in width, and six-and-one-half feet in height, the FTX offers ample proportions. In the rear tailgate is a smooth operating hideaway ramp that extends to the ground when the gate is open. The instrument panel and center console arch bend outward, wrapping around each occupant, forming two protective cells. Under the hood, is a large-displacement V-8 hybrid gas-electric engine that pumps out loads of torque while delivering V-6 fuel efficiency.

Combining the worlds of an SUV with that of a sports car, Volkswagen has created the radical “concept T.” It's equipped with a 241 horsepower V-6 front-mounted transverse engine. The full-fledged concept T off-roader accelerates to 62.5 mph in 6.9 seconds and its top speed is electronically limited to 144 mph. In both on-road and off-road driving, this power is fed via an automatic gearbox with manual shift option (Tiptronic) to the 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive. Styling includes wing doors, T-bar roof, headlights that

Based on the Cherokee Limited, the Total Exposure' concept Jeep featured a cutaway roof with sliding canopy, rear entrance folding stairway and a stand-up photographic platform. Other special touches on the Total Exposure included roof rack wind deflectors, tubular guardrails and Pole-mounted, height-adjustable observation seats.

Jeep’s Hurricane concept must be the most maneuverable and powerful 4x4 ever built. Equipped with two 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engines: one in the front and one in the back, there was a total of 670 horsepower and 740 lb-ft of torque available on demand. Two modes of automated four-wheel steering were used, first, the traditional with rear tires turning in the opposite direction of the front. A second mode turned all four-wheels in the same direction for nimble crab-like steering. With 14.3 inches of ground clearance, and 37-inch tall tires, there wasn’t much that the Hurricane couldn’t climb. The black one-piece structural carbon fiber body also formed the chassis, plus suspension and power train were mounted directly to the body. Chrysler Group Multi-Displacement System (MDS) enabled the Hurricane to alternate between 4-, 8-, 12- or 16-cylinders and clock 0-60 mph in less than five-seconds.

Inspired by the exoskeleton of insects, Hyundai designers created the radical HCD10 Hyundai Hellion concept. Painted Dakar Gold, the aggressive exterior design featured a wide stance, piercing headlights that were angled towards its dominant grille, prominent scoop on the clamshell hood, and removable canvas roof panels. The dream machine was configured as a three-door, all-wheel drive, sport crossover utility vehicle. The 2+2 interior was finished in Black Desert Night with glossy white accents and matte aluminum details. Rolling on custom 20-inch aluminum five-spoke wheels that were Teflon coated, the HCD10 came powered by an eco-friendly 3.0 liter V-6 Common-rail Diesel that produced 236 ponies, and came connected to a six-speed automatic.

Jeep has taken its legendary all-weather fun philosophy and created the lightweight Renegade concept for the “Stylish Green” segment of the marketplace. Renegade has a 40-mile lithium-ion battery pack, and a 115 horsepower, 1.5-liter, 3-cyclinder BLUETEC diesel. The combination delivers a 400-mile driving range, and an equivalent petroleum fuel economy of 110 mpg. Dual electric 200 kilowatt (268 horsepower) motors propel the 4x4 system. Materials used are environmentally responsible, both in manufacture and end-of-vehicle-life recyclability. Aluminum body features large flared wheel openings, cut-down speedster windshield, and elongated triangular openings in each of the two sculpted doors. Built without a top, the prototype has a roll bar, weather-tight, durable cockpit, and cargo deck for outdoor gear.

More compact than a Hummer H3, the HX two-door concept was an open-air, off-road vehicle that acclimated to varied trail conditions, cargo needs or passenger whims. Along with the removable roof panels and modular rear roof assembly, the fender flares and doors could also be detached from the body. Aeronautically inspired four-seat interior features functional, lightweight elements, and reconfigurable instruments for highway and off-road driving. Motivation comes from an E85 FlexFuel, 304 hp 3.6 liter SIDI V-6, backed by a six-speed automatic gearbox that’s teamed with the 4WD system to offer exceptional low-speed traction and crawling capability. Unique 20-inch rims are wrapped in 35-inch custom Bridgestone Dueler tires.

As a tribute to its historic roots, International built a one-of-a-kind version of the D-Series truck that drove a nation’s post-WWII expansion. Sporting a mild chop and shaved trim, the DMAXX is painted in high-gloss burgundy and black that captures the spirit of the original model. Under the hood, the chromed and detailed MaxxForce 7 diesel V-8 engine incorporates technology that was nothing more than a dream in 1939 when the first one rolled off the assembly line. The result is 350 horsepower and a tire-shredding 620 lb-ft of torque. Rolling on 18-inch wheels and tires, the D-Rod has a boxed and reinforced frame, and height-adjustable air suspension.

Bold and sculpted, the Explorer America concept looks as if forged of metal, then machined to create the shape. The clean profile includes integrated side cameras instead of sideview mirrors, and a sliding door that pivots out and glides on an invisible track. A weight-saving unibody platform is the foundation for this dynamic model of efficiency. Two engines could be offered, the 4-cylinder 2-liter delivering 275 hp or, as a premium engine, a 3.5-liter V-6 delivering about 340 hp. A fuel-efficient 6-speed transmission with auto shift control would back both powerplants. Inside, there are single-touch stackable, sliding seats, and a work table with seats deploy from the tailgate.
